Horton Creek: One of Arizona’s Most Beautiful Summer Hikes

If there is one thing I will probably say over and over again here at Arizona Girl, it’s this: Arizona has a way of surprising you.

People picture Arizona as cactus, desert, triple-digit temperatures, and endless stretches of dirt. And while I absolutely love all of that about this state, some of my favorite places in Arizona look completely different.

Horton Creek is one of those places.

On this adventure, it was me, Arizona Boy, and Chaco heading up toward Payson for a day on one of the most beautiful trails I have experienced in Arizona. And honestly? Horton Creek reminded me once again why I could spend a lifetime exploring this state and still never see everything.

A Completely Different Side of Arizona

Horton Creek Trail is located in the Tonto National Forest near Payson, tucked into the beautiful Mogollon Rim country.

The trail follows alongside Horton Creek for much of the hike, which means you are surrounded by water, towering trees, shade, and that peaceful sound of a creek flowing nearby.

And that alone makes this trail feel like such a perfect escape—especially during an Arizona summer.

The trail gradually makes its way through the forest, with beautiful stands of pine and other lush greenery surrounding you. For much of the hike, you are never too far from the water, and there are opportunities to hike down closer to the creek and explore along its banks.

There were moments where we were right beside the water and other moments where we were walking along the trail listening to it flow below us.

It was one of those hikes where I constantly found myself stopping and looking around.

Waterfalls, Creek Crossings & So Much to Explore

One of my favorite things about Horton Creek is that it doesn’t feel like you are just walking toward one destination.

The entire hike is the experience.

As you follow the trail, Horton Creek tumbles through the forest, creating beautiful little waterfalls and cascades along the way. There are spots where you can make your way down toward the creek and explore, sit near the water, or just take a minute to enjoy the sound of it rushing through the trees.

There is something about water in Arizona that always feels a little magical to me.

Maybe it’s because we spend so much of our time surrounded by desert, but when you find a place like Horton Creek—lush, green, shaded, and full of flowing water—it almost doesn’t feel real.

And yet, it is.

Right here in Arizona.

Arizona Sister Butterflies Everywhere

One of the things that made this hike feel especially magical were the butterflies.

There were Arizona Sister butterflies everywhere.

Seeing them fluttering around the trail and the creek was one of those little moments that made me slow down and really take in everything around me.

We also found mushrooms growing along the trail, which added even more to the feeling that we had somehow stepped into a completely different world.

Between the butterflies, mushrooms, water, trees, and waterfalls, Horton Creek was full of those tiny details that are easy to miss if you’re rushing through a hike.

But those are always my favorite things to find.

The things you weren’t necessarily looking for.

The Perfect Arizona Escape

The weather was absolutely perfect while we were hiking.

And that’s one of the reasons I love heading up toward Payson and the Mogollon Rim.

You can leave the Valley, where summer temperatures can feel absolutely brutal, and find yourself hiking through shaded forests alongside cold mountain water.

Horton Creek is known as a popular warm-weather hike because of its higher elevation, shade, and constant proximity to the creek. The trail eventually leads toward Horton Spring, where water emerges from the rocks near the Mogollon Rim and feeds the creek below. (Arizona Trailblazers)

Even if you’re not planning to hike every single mile of the trail, there is so much beauty to experience along the way.

You can take your time.

Stop at the creek.

Explore the waterfalls.

Watch the butterflies.

Let your dog splash around.

And just enjoy being outside.

A Little History of Horton Creek

Horton Creek and Horton Spring were named after L.J. Horton, a cattle rancher and early settler who lived near the creek in the 1880s. The trail itself follows country that has been used for generations, and the area sits within the incredible landscape of the Mogollon Rim. (Arizona Highways)

Today, Horton Creek is one of those Arizona hikes that people return to again and again.

And after experiencing it for myself, I completely understand why.

Our Day at Horton Creek

For me, the best part of this adventure wasn’t just the trail.

It was getting to experience it with my people.

Arizona Boy, Chaco, and I spent the day exploring, hiking, stopping to look at the creek, and taking in all the little things that made this place so special.

Those are the days I want more of.

The days where we pack up the car, head somewhere in Arizona, and don’t really need anything except good shoes, some water, and a little curiosity.

Horton Creek was beautiful.

Not just because of the waterfalls.

Not just because of the creek.

Not just because of the butterflies and the mushrooms.

But because it reminded me exactly why I started exploring Arizona in the first place.

There is always something beautiful waiting around the next bend.

Sometimes it’s a waterfall.

Sometimes it’s a butterfly.

Sometimes it’s just a quiet moment standing next to the people you love, surrounded by a place you didn’t even know could exist in your own state.

And sometimes?

It’s all of those things at once.
